Question: as a subscriber I pd $10 via a pdf thing that I have not printed because not enough time & good system to have it printed. If I want it printed -how much for that upgrade? Gloria
Gloria, yes, I can look into that. I have to print these locally through a print shop, so it adds cost beyond the PDF. I would probably need to add about $25 total for printing, handling, and shipping.
to be fair, everybody reading the Bible for themselves without any help or assistance from those secured in the faith have led to over 40,000 different denominations
Jordan, I hear you, brother, but I do not think the problem is people reading the Bible for themselves. The Bereans were commended for searching the scriptures daily to see whether those things were so.
The problem is when men stop doing that and let systems, traditions, councils, popes, pastors, seminaries, or favorite teachers do the reading for them. Denominations are not proof that open Bibles failed. They are proof that men still follow men, even with a Bible in the house.
most denominations today don’t believe much of what the early Church fathers believed, including those who knew the apostles specifically. For example, even Luther believed the Eucharist was really the blood and flesh of Jesus Christ
It is very difficult to just pick up and read AND have good (immediate) Biblical comprehension without help. "Tolle lege" worked for Augustine, but I suspect he had someone to ask (as the Ethiopian eunuch had Philip). We stand on the shoulders of giants (as Newton said about his physical understanding) - from Athanasius all the way up to today. Of course, the key is to pray for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened (see Matthew 6 and Ephesians 1) - while knowing that the most prevalent way God opens our minds is through studying with friends or hearing teaching from wise elders (Nehemiah 8:7-8). In my experience, the Bible began to 'come alive' when I saw the unity and consistency of the word, from Genesis to Revelation. As an example, Micah 2:11 makes the exact same point as Isaiah 30:8-11 and 2 Timothy 4:3-4. Reading Proverbs is very helpful - the wisdom is down-to-earth and there are few places where doctrine is actively involved. Psalms is similar and can be very instructive, if we can relate the author's words (praise, lament, confession, sighing, rejoicing, confusion, etc.) to our own lives. Psalm 73, read aloud, can re-direct our entire line of thought.
